The present piece is a fine Qing dynasty scholar’s object carved from Shoushan stone. It is skillfully fashioned from a naturally shaped piece of yellow “tianhuang” stone, following the contours of the material to depict a seated Maitreya Luohan. The figure is rendered with a serene and benevolent expression, a bare chest and rounded belly, while the folds of the robes are carved with restrained and fluid lines. The base may be engraved with a seal inscription, allowing the object to serve both as a seal and as an elegant desk ornament.
The stone is fine, warm and lustrous, with a rich, naturally matured patina developed through years of handling and appreciation. The body is largely free of significant cracks or losses and is preserved together with a matching contemporary hardwood stand, forming a complete ensemble.
The Luohan carries auspicious associations of joy, generosity and abundant blessings, making the present work an elegant Shoushan stone carving for the scholar’s studio. Its appealing material, accomplished carving and well-preserved condition make it a noteworthy example of Qing dynasty scholar’s objects.
